Why we started
this business…
Personal experiences pointed
out the need for tools to manage information
Organized Solutions began in 2003.
One of our first products—Keep
Tabs On Caregiving---evolved from
a tool we devised to address the problems that confronted
us as caregivers for our aging parents.
Needing answers and help, we found little guidance for
our new responsibilities. As we struggled to cope with
this new caregiving role, our search for answers led us
to a broad, but haphazard array of resources. We had limited
time to gather the necessary information due to the time
constraints of our jobs and families. A crisis situation
occurred in our family that pointed out the importance
of having information documented and readily available.
My father suddenly had a heart attack
and was hospitalized. My mother had Alzheimer’s
Disease and
dad was the one caring for her at their home. I was the
only one of three siblings who lived in the same
city as my mother and father, and it was up to me to gather
vital personal information and start making some health
care decisions. I was confronted with providing information
to the doctors at the hospital while rushing over to care
for my mother who could not be left alone at this stage
of her disease. We knew that
we needed some in-home help for mom and perhaps dad, and
I also needed to find medical, financial,
and legal information concerning my dad and my mom. We
felt overwhelmed searching for information, documents,
and professional aid.
We spent a lot of time searching for
important papers and information that was suddenly required:
list of dad’s medications; a notebook dad kept that
contained his medical history; their checkbook and bills
that needed attention while he was hospitalized; legal
documents such as dad’s health care declaration
and power of attorney. We also spent a great deal of time
looking through Web sites and trying to determine
the right questions to ask an in-home care worker or agency
once we narrowed down the choices.
After a period of time with in-home
help and adding assistive devices to make their home safer,
it was
time to consider other living options. Perhaps their house
was no longer practical or safe for them.
“Is it time for assisted
living, and if so, how do we find the right place?”
Mom and dad eventually moved to assisted living,
but we still had health care decisions to make.
Dad was taking a lot of medications
and we were concerned about his medication management.
“How do we know
if Dad is taking all his medications?”
We bought dad a pill organizer with cubicles that divided
his medications for a seven day-a-week,
four times-a-day schedule. He
still made mistakes dispensing medications from the pill
containers into
this organizer. So, we sat down with dad and devised a
medication chart that allowed him to fill in the medication
name, quantity, color, start date, and other pertinent
information. When he used this paper
chart as a guide to fill his pill organizer instead of
looking at the medicine container labels each week,
he was able to fill the organizer correctly. We still
monitored that he took all his medicines from the pill
organizer, but the new chart gave us peace of mind that
he was dispensing and taking his medications
as his doctor prescribed.
We had recently
gone through the difficult discussions with mom about
not driving anymore and it was
now time to talk to dad about limiting his driving.
“Is it still safe for
him to drive?”
We were trying to balance his safety with his independence.
Finding the answers to all these questions
was hard enough, but keeping track of it and keeping it
up-to-date with ever-changing circumstances was a nightmare!
Out of our own necessity, we began to develop products
to help families like ours get control of such situations
and manage information better.
Solutions from our experiences
Many families today are in the same
situation. Baby boomers, in particular, are “sandwiched”
between
their jobs, caring for their own children, and caring
for aging parents. Our products let you benefit from
our experience. We know the importance of balancing your
needs with your loved one’s safety and independence.
We offer practical, easy-to-use tools to ease the often-difficult
caregiving journey.
Be ready to face the challenges
Even if you aren’t currently
in this caregiving role, chances are good that one day
you will, as nearly one out of four American families
are providing care for a family member or friend. When
that day comes, will you be prepared to deal with it by
having the information, products, and support resources
you need to manage the challenges caregiving presents?
Our health care products will help you perform your caregiving
role more effectively by providing a comprehensive system
to guide you. Our primary focus remains the care and well
being of parents and loved ones with diminished capabilities.
We have listened to your requests for
products which meet the growing demand of baby boomers
helping their aging parents, and older adults who are
computer savvy.
- The development of Remind
& Find labels originated
with my mother’s struggle at home finding household
items due to her memory loss. As her dementia progressed,
she increasingly relied on reminders and placed post-it
notes on cabinets and drawers in the kitchen to help
her locate items. When words alone were no longer recognizable,
we decided that picture and word prompts would
be a better communication tool. We developed Remind
& Find to help other
people with memory
loss or cognitive disabilities remain independent as
long as possible.
- We now offer the Keep
Tabs On Caregiving CD
by itself for people who only want to keep their records
and information on a computer. The same CD is still
included in the complete kit version.
Both of our new products are
designed to support you in your caregiving efforts.
Professional caregivers will also
welcome our products as tools to supplement their services.
